Audi SA Charges Ahead with New 150kW Rapid Chargers

July 2024, Johannesburg – Ladies and gentlemen, start your electric engines! Audi South Africa has just cranked up the juice on the nation’s electric mobility game. In a move that’s sure to spark joy among EV enthusiasts, Audi has rolled out six brand-spanking-new 150kW DC rapid public chargers. And no, these aren’t just any chargers—they’re strategically sprinkled along South Africa’s N1, N2, and N3 corridors, ensuring you’re never too far from a quick jolt of electric goodness.

A Million Rand Power Play

Let’s talk numbers. This is the third wave of Audi South Africa’s high-voltage investment blitz, taking their total spend north of R50 million. It’s the automotive equivalent of bringing a high-powered flashlight to a candle-lit dinner. Following the initial electrifying investments in 2022 and 2023, Audi teamed up with Rubicon to add more than 120 DC and AC charging points to the national grid. Now, they’re back at it, adding six ultra-fast chargers to keep the momentum surging.

Location, Location, Location

These new 150kW chargers aren’t just thrown willy-nilly across the map. Audi has meticulously placed them in key hotspots along South Africa’s major highways. Think of it as creating an electric yellow brick road for your e-tron. Here’s where you can find these power-packed pit stops:

  • N1 – Fleurdal Mall, Bloemfontein: Perfect for a quick zap on your way out of Gauteng or a well-earned break before the final leg between Cape Town and Johannesburg.

  • N1 – Century City, Cape Town: Ideal for the busy bees commuting in and out of the Cape Town CBD.

  • N1 – Tygervalley Shopping Centre, Cape Town: Just five minutes off the N1, ready to juice up the surrounding suburbs.

  • N2 – Galleria Mall, Amanzimtoti: A must-stop for tourists cruising up and down the KZN coastline.

  • N2 – Somerset Mall, Somerset West: Serving locals and travelers heading along the N2 into and out of Cape Town.

  • N3 – The Avenues Centre, Hilton: Strategically placed for a quick recharge between Gauteng and Durban.

Fast and Furious Charging

These chargers are not just fast; they’re warp-speed fast. A 150kW ultra-fast charger can top up an average Audi e-tron battery from 5% to 80% in just 30 minutes. That’s less time than it takes to binge-watch an episode of your favorite series. So, while your car is powering up, you can grab a coffee, stretch your legs, or just enjoy a moment of zen before hitting the road again.

Power Players Speak

“This third wave of investment into the public charging network in South Africa highlights once again our commitment to electric mobility,” says Sascha Sauer, Head of Audi South Africa. “We believe EVs represent the future of our brand, both globally as well as locally, and we’re therefore playing our part in making electric mobility a convenient, straightforward reality for more and more South Africans.”

Greg Blandford, Rubicon’s Energy and E-mobility Director, is equally pumped about the partnership. “Rubicon is proud to have collaborated with Audi South Africa on the installation of six cutting-edge Wallbox Supernova 150kW DC chargers. These chargers feature pioneering European technology and notably, stand among the first of their kind to be installed worldwide. This marks a major achievement for both Rubicon and Audi SA.”

So, there you have it, folks. Audi South Africa is not just plugging into the future; they’re turbocharging it. For more electrifying details on Audi’s vision, hop over to www.audi.co.za. Now, go forth and charge up—because the future waits for no one.
