Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky Stars to Set Up Thrilling Title Showdown

As the FIA RX2e Championship reached its boiling point in Belgium on August 6th, the world witnessed an electrifying debut performance from Johan Kristoffersson, who claimed victory on his first outing. However, it was Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky who stole the spotlight with a stellar display, setting the stage for a nail-biting title showdown.

With the top tier of the FIA World Rallycross Championship absent from the Mettet race due to ongoing investigations into a fire at Lydden Hill two weeks prior, Kristoffersson and other World RX stalwarts including Timmy Hansen, Kevin Hansen, and Ole Christian Veiby, took advantage of the opportunity to join the RX2e grid.

Kevin Hansen, the younger of the Hansen brothers, initially set the pace, but it was Kristoffersson who quickly found his rhythm. With three consecutive heat wins, the five-time world champion soared to the top of the intermediate standings. Despite a slow start in his semi-final, a red flag following a dramatic roll for his Kristoffersson Motorsport teammate Veiby gave him a second chance. Kristoffersson made the most of it and skillfully fought off his challengers to secure a well-deserved victory, despite suspension damage sustained from a first-corner collision.

Reflecting on his triumph, Kristoffersson expressed his delight at the pace he showcased throughout the weekend. While acknowledging the challenges faced during the final, he credited his ability to adapt and drive skillfully even with a damaged car as the key to his success.

However, it was Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky who emerged as the ultimate star of the show. Her superb drive to second place closed the championship gap to just two points behind her Team E stablemate Nils Andersson in the pursuit of the RX2e crown. Although Ole Henry Steinsholt initially finished ahead of Åhlin-Kottulinsky, a penalty for contact reshuffled the standings, placing the determined driver in a strong position ahead of the season finale.

In the Euro RX1 category, defending champion Anton Marklund finally secured his first victory of the year. Nevertheless, his triumph was not without drama, as he had to deal with an alternator issue during the final. Despite his title rivals – Enzo Ide, Jānis Baumanis, and Patrick O’Donovan – being eliminated after the semi-finals, Marklund’s win has given him a comfortable 20-point advantage at the top of the table, with only 23 points remaining to be contested at Germany’s Estering in two weeks’ time.

Ulrik Linnemann demonstrated immense skill and experience, producing a vintage performance to claim the runner-up spot in the Euro RX1 battle. Meanwhile, Tamás Kárai showcased his capabilities, reaching the podium with a commendable third-place finish.

The stage is now set for a thrilling title showdown in the FIA RX2e Championship. Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky’s remarkable form and Johan Kristoffersson’s undeniable talent have ignited an intense battle for the championship crown. With the final race at Germany’s Estering on the horizon, motorsport fans can expect a breathtaking showdown to determine this season’s ultimate champion. As the drivers prepare to put it all on the line, the adrenaline-fueled action promises to be an unforgettable spectacle for motorsport enthusiasts worldwide. Let’s buckle up and get ready for an enthralling conclusion to an exceptional season of rallycross racing.
