Mitsubishi Triton Athlete Set to Amaze
Mitsubishi Motors South Africa is making waves in the bakkie market once again with the introduction of the limited-edition Mitsubishi Triton Athlete. This bold and distinctive model promises to redefine the expectations of South African bakkie enthusiasts, combining striking aesthetics with remarkable performance capabilities.
The Triton Athlete joins the prestigious Triton lineup, a range that has earned a reputation for its sporty design, robust performance, and off-road prowess. With this latest addition, Mitsubishi is taking the Triton concept to new heights, setting a new standard for what a bakkie can be.
Jeffrey Allison, General Manager: Marketing at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA), acknowledges South Africa’s deep affection for bakkies, where customization is a way of life. “The Triton Athlete caters to that need by offering a bespoke package to make it stand out whether you are on or off-road,” Allison states.

Based on the Triton 4×4 Automatic, the Triton Athlete draws inspiration from the Café Racer concept, a tribute to the British motorcycle culture of the 1960s that blended motorsport aesthetics with personalization. This philosophy is manifested through distinctive exterior features, including red accents on the front bumper lower garnish, side-step, and rear bumper step, reminiscent of iconic motorsport body kits, such as those seen on the legendary Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.
The exterior is further adorned with a comprehensive decal kit inspired by the world of motorsport, featuring a hood decal, tailgate strip, and side stripes bearing the number 01. The Triton Athlete boasts LED headlamps with black accents and matching daytime running lamps, and rides on exclusive black 18-inch alloys.
The motorsport theme carries over to the interior, where black and red stitching graces the leather steering wheel, parking brake, and floor console. The uniqueness continues with leather seats and door trim adorned with red leather stitching, elevating the Triton Athlete’s premium feel.

However, the Triton Athlete is not just about style – it retains Mitsubishi’s renowned performance and off-road capabilities. Powering the Athlete is the same 2.4L DOHC MIVEC Diesel engine, generating an impressive 133kW at 3,500 r/min and 430Nm at 2,500r/min. This power is seamlessly managed by a six-speed automatic transmission with Intelligent Shift Control, delivering smooth and responsive shifts.
What sets the Triton Athlete apart from the competition is its legendary Super Select II 4WD system, offering unmatched traction and handling on various surfaces. With selectable off-road modes for gravel, mud/snow, sand, and even rock, the Triton Athlete can confidently navigate diverse terrains. With generous ground clearance, approach and departure angles, and a ramp breakover angle, the Triton Athlete is primed to conquer any obstacle in its path.
