NWM Ford Castrol’s Historic Victory at the Waterberg 400: A Championship Triumph
In an extraordinary display of skill and teamwork, Neil Woolridge Motorsport (NWM) Ford Castrol team clinched a historic victory at the Waterberg 400, the final round of the highly competitive South African Rally-Raid Championship (SARRC). The NWM Ford team’s triumph not only marked a significant milestone in the SARRC but also a momentous occasion in South African motorsport history.
Gareth Woolridge and Boyd Dreyer (#277), driving the formidable NWM Ford Castrol T1+ Ranger, dominated the race, securing both the overall Production Vehicle championship and the prestigious Class FIA T1+ championship titles. Their victory was a masterclass in precision and determination, as they battled the elements and fierce competition to emerge victorious.
Following closely in second place were team-mates Lance Woolridge and Kenny Gilbert (#234), who displayed exceptional skill and synergy, contributing to the team’s overall success. Their second-place finish was instrumental in securing the perfect result for the NWM Ford Castrol team.
This victory is particularly notable as it marks the first overall South African championship title for the NWM Ford team in 17 years, the last being won by Neil Woolridge and Kenny Skjoldhammer in 2006. Furthermore, it’s a historic moment as it’s the first time a father and son duo have both been crowned overall SA champions in the series.
The race weekend started with a challenging 40km qualifying sprint, where Gareth and Boyd initially led the stage before encountering a slow puncture. However, their remarkable resilience saw them replace the wheel in just 1 minute and 15 seconds, finishing seventh overall, merely 01:52 seconds behind the leaders.
Saturday’s main race comprised two arduous 178km loops, characterized by intense heat and dusty conditions. Gareth and Boyd, displaying sheer determination, surged into the lead on the second lap, with Lance and Kenny securing the second spot. Their victory not only showcased their exceptional racing prowess but also signified a notable achievement over their long-standing Toyota rivals, the outgoing multiple SARRC champions and three-time Dakar Rally winners.
The significance of this victory extends beyond individual glory, as the NWM Ford Castrol team also earned the coveted Manufacturers Award at the Waterberg 400. Team principal Neil Woolridge commended the team’s hard work and dedication, highlighting the collaborative effort that led to this triumph.
In light of this victory, Gareth and Boyd are now set to compete at the 2024 Dakar Rally in the NWM M-Sport T1+ Ranger, entering as the 2023 South African Rally-Raid Championship winners. This achievement not only adds to their impressive resume but also paves the way for future successes.
The NWM Ford Castrol team’s remarkable accomplishment at the Waterberg 400 is a testament to their skill, teamwork, and unwavering commitment. It stands as a proud moment for the team and an inspiration for motorsport enthusiasts worldwide.
