Volvo Brings Armoured XC90 to South Africa: A Blend of Luxury and Ballistic Protection
Volvo Car South Africa has made a significant addition to its vehicle lineup with the introduction of an armoured version of its flagship SUV, the XC90. This special model caters to a niche market, offering discreet ballistic protection directly from the renowned Swedish luxury car manufacturer.
Discreet Yet Effective Protection
The armoured XC90 is a part of Volvo’s global product range and stands out for its 360° ballistic protection, certified to the NIJ-IIIA standard. This certification involves rigorous testing on the entire vehicle, adhering to the stringent NIJ-IIIA standard in conjunction with the VPAM BRV 2009 standard (B4), making the SUV capable of withstanding handgun fire.
What’s remarkable about the armoured XC90 is the integration of its protective features. The vehicle uses reinforced laminated glass, high-strength steel plating, and special aramid composites, all seamlessly incorporated into its design. This integration ensures that the occupants are protected without compromising the vehicle’s stylish Scandinavian aesthetic, which exudes luxury without drawing undue attention.
Maintained Performance and Comfort
Despite the additional weight of approximately 300 kg due to the armouring, Volvo has skillfully optimized the XC90’s chassis and braking system. This ensures that the fundamental properties of the SUV remain largely unchanged compared to the standard model. Moreover, all of Volvo’s standard signature safety systems are fully operational in this armoured variant.
A Response to Growing Demand
Greg Maruszewski, Managing Director of Volvo Car South Africa, highlighted that the armoured XC90 is tailored for a special group of customers who seek an extra layer of protection. “The rising demand for armoured vehicles globally and in South Africa has led to the development of this special XC90 variant. This addition to our local range is a factory-backed solution for individuals requiring that additional protection,” Maruszewski stated.
Importantly, the armoured XC90 retains the vehicle’s standard five-year/100,000 km manufacturer warranty and maintenance plan. In South Africa, the price for this special protection version of the XC90 starts at R2.5 million (including VAT), offering a unique combination of luxury, safety, and peace of mind for its select clientele.
