What a weekend of rallying action it was at Secto Rally Finland! Elfyn Evans showed his mettle and put on a stunning performance to close in on the WRC leader, Kalle Rovanperä. The excitement began on Friday afternoon when Rovanperä, who had been leading the championship, suffered a dramatic crash, catapulting Evans into the lead. From there on, Evans was on a roll, churning out an incredible seven consecutive stage wins on Saturday. It was a display of sheer brilliance as he left his closest rival, Thierry Neuville, trailing far behind.

Behind the wheel of a Toyota GR Yaris, Evans extended his lead even further on Sunday, eventually taking the checkered flag with a commanding 39.1-second margin of victory. And to top it off, he claimed maximum points by winning the closing Wolf Power Stage, further denting Rovanperä’s points advantage.

For Evans, it was a joy to drive the car on Finland’s fast and challenging roads. The atmosphere was electrifying, and he expressed his gratitude for the fantastic support. Not only did he secure his seventh career win, but he also closed the gap on the championship leader, setting up an exciting title fight in the remaining four rounds.

The home team, Toyota Gazoo Racing, had plenty to celebrate as their victory extended their manufacturers’ championship lead over Hyundai Motorsport to 67 points. It was a strong team effort, and the crowd’s energy clearly played a part in motivating the drivers to perform at their best.

But as is often the case in motorsport, the high-speed thrills came with their fair share of spills. Ott Tänak and Esapekka Lappi, early challengers for the podium, were both forced to retire on Friday. Engine failure ended Tänak’s bid, while Lappi had an unfortunate encounter with a tree.

While Neuville put on a solid performance, he had no answer to Evans’ blistering pace. The Belgian driver secured a respectable third place but had to acknowledge Evans’ dominance on the Finnish terrain.

The fight for the remaining podium spots was no less intense. Takamoto Katsuta and Teemu Suninen engaged in a relentless duel, with Katsuta ultimately coming out on top and securing a well-deserved second place. Suninen’s brave move to save weight by forgoing a spare wheel nearly paid off, but Katsuta managed to maintain a narrow lead.

We must also acknowledge the commendable performance of Toyota team principal Jari-Matti Latvala, who made a popular return to top-level competition after a three-year absence. He showed consistency and secured a respectable fifth place, earning cheers from the home crowd.

The rally showcased the resilience and talent of the drivers, especially in the face of attrition. Oliver Solberg drove impressively to secure sixth place, and Sami Pajari claimed the WRC2 victory. Adrien Fourmaux secured eighth place in WRC2, while Nikolay Gryazin and Andreas Mikkelsen rounded out the top 10.

As the dust settles on Secto Rally Finland, the anticipation builds for the next gravel battleground at the legendary EKO Acropolis Rally Greece. With the championship fight heating up and the season far from over, we can expect more heart-pounding action and surprises in the races to come.

So buckle up, rally fans, because the World Rally Championship is serving up a thrilling season filled with high-speed drama and breathtaking moments. Let’s cheer on our favorite drivers as they navigate treacherous terrains and battle for rally glory!
